Community Health Education Center Do you prefer learning through classes, books, the Internet, or a little of each style? Whatever your preference, the Community Health Education Center (CHEC) has many resources to help you take an active role in your health. The CHEC Resource Library has one of the largest onsite collections with over 850 health books and audiovisuals for consumers in northern Michigan. More than forty subscriptions to many reputable, consumer health newsletters such as Nutrition Action Health Letter, ADHD Challenge, Coping with Cancer, Harvard's Women's Health Letter, Arthritis Today, Diabetes Forecast, and many others. The CHEC provides education and support services on prevention and health promotion, information about specific medical conditions for patients, friends, and family members, and advice on making informed health decisions. For those interested in staying healthy, there are resources on postponing chronic disease and managing how to live life when faced with a chronic medical condition. The CHEC also assists people wishing to change a lifestyle behavior by providing information and counseling on the health benefits of behavior change, connections with support groups, and encouragement from the staff. The majority of the services are free; however there may be a modest fee for a class or health screening. The Community Health Education Center reaches out to the community by providing outreach services such as health fairs, worksite and community screenings, and classroom teaching to reach the youth as well as adults in the Northern Michigan Regional Hospital service area.
