Northern Michigan Regional Hospital has maintained accreditation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on cancer as a comprehensive community cancer program since 1979. To obtain this status, the cancer program must offer state-of-the-art resources for diagnosis of cancer including radiology, laboratory, cytology and pathology, surgery, medical oncology and radiation oncology for cancer treatment.

Comprised of a highly qualified team of physicians, nurses and other professionals, the cancer program is dedicated to focusing on the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of the patient and family throughout the course of the disease. This focus, along with state-of-the-art resources for prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, is one of the many reasons physicians refer patients to Northern
Michigan Regional Hospital.

A partnership between Northern Michigan Regional Hospital and Detroit Medical Center's Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute was established on July 14, 2000. At that time, Karmanos Cancer Institute, affiliated with Wayne State University, was one of the only 36 facilities in the country designated by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive cancer facility, and was one of the top 40 cancer centers in the nation based on quality of care, according to U.S. News & World Report.

The affiliation provides access to the most current cancer treatments and creates a mechanism for interaction between Northern Michigan Regional Hospital physicians and those at Karmanos. It affords cancer patients at NMRH access to extensive cancer resources of Karmanos, including 400 cancer specialists, 300 clinical research trials and comprehensive treatment programs.

The Northern Michigan Regional Hospital Cancer Center in Petoskey is an American College of Surgeons accredited Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program. Cancer specialists and their staff work with patients and the community every day to improve awareness of risk factors, detection and treatment of breast cancer. With cutting-edge research underway about the causes, women with breast cancer can look forward to a better quality of life and surviving this disease.
